Chiefs 23, Raiders 17

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated The Oakland Raiders 23-17 at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland. WR Randy Moss caught five passes for 127 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown, QB Kerry Collins completed 21 of 35 pass attempts for 263 yards and 1 TD. LB Danny Clark led the way on defense with 10 tackles for the Raiders, and CB Charles Woodson recorded a forced fumble.

The Chiefs won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. WR Dante Hall returned K Sebastian Janikowski's opening kickoff to the Chiefs 46. WR Eddie Kennison picked up 8 yards on a reverse over the left side. QB Trent Green's first pass fell incomplete. On 3rd and 2, Green's pass was deflected by DE Bobby Hamilton and fell incomplete. Rookie CB Chris Carr muffed rookie P Dustin Colquitt's punt. The Chiefs took possession at the Raiders 17. Two plays later, the Chiefs faced 3rd and 3 at the 10. Green hit RB Priest Holmes in the flat and SS Derrick Gibson pushed him out of bounds short of the marker. On 4th and short, Holmes twisted his way for a couple of yards and a 1st down at the 5-yard line. Holmes was dropped for no gain on two consecutive carries. On 3rd and goal, TE Tony Gonzalez made the catch and was stopped short of the goal line by FS Stuart Schweigert. On 4th and goal at the 1, Holmes got some serious air and dove over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown run. K Lawrence Tynes' extra point put the Chiefs up 7-0 with 9:30 left in the 1st quarter. The plunge capped off an 8-play, 17-yard drive, which took 4:26 off the clock.

Carr returned Tynes' ensuing kickoff 20 yards to the Raiders 36-yard line. After a RB Zack Crockett 2-yard run, QB Kerry Collins connected with RB LaMont Jordan for a 5-yard pickup over the middle. On 3rd and 2, Collins found Jordan for a 10-yard gain and a first down. After a 2-yard Jordan run over the left side, Collins hit WR Jerry Porter for a 10-yard gain and a first down at the Chiefs 35.

Jordan then took a handoff from Collins and fumbled. The Raiders recovered at the 37. On 2nd and 12, WR Randy Moss was not tall enough to haul in a Collins' aerial. On 3rd and 12, Collins was sacked and fumbled. Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson recovered at the Chiefs 35. DE Derrick Burgess ended the Chiefs next possession with a 3rd down sack of Green. Carr weaved his way through the coverage and returned Colquitt's punt 34 yards to the Chiefs 49-yard line where the Raiders took over with 2:56 left in the 1st quarter.

After a 5-yard screen pass to Jordan, the first-year Raider picked up 11 on a pitch play to the right side. Collins then hit a wide-open Moss for an 18-yard gain. Collins then found Porter for a 12-yard gain to the 3-yard line. A 2-yard Jordan dive left the Raiders with 2nd and goal at the 1. Jordan then crashed into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run. Janikowski's PAT tied the game at 7-7 with 14:57 left in the 2nd quarter. The run capped off a 6-play, 49-yard drive, which took 2:59 off of the McAfee Coliseum game clock.

Hall returned Janikowski's ensuing kickoff 28 yards to the Chiefs 30. Green then hit WR Sammie Parker for a 49-yard gain after CB Renaldo Hill fell down. After Holmes left the game with an injury, RB Larry Johnson picked up 11 and set up 1st and goal at the 6. Johnson then finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Tynes' extra point put the Chiefs up 14-7 with 13:15 left in the 2nd quarter. The touchdown burst culminated a 4-play, 70-yard drive, which took 1:42 off of the clock.

Carr returned Tynes' ensuing kickoff 27 yards to the Raiders 24. Three plays later, Collins hit Moss for a 21-yard gain over the middle for a 1st down at the Raiders 49. Two plays later, Porter hauled in a Collins' pass for a 22-yard pickup to the Kansas City 29. After another pass to Porter, Jordan ripped off an 18-yard run to the 5. Collins then hit Moss for a touchdown pass, but Moss was called for offensive pass interference. The Raiders were unable to punch it into the end zone and were forced to settle for a 30-yard Janikowski field goal attempt. The successful kick capped off an 11-play, 64-yard drive and cut the Chiefs lead to 14-10 with 8:30 left in the 2nd quarter.

Hall returned Janikowski's ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the Kansas City 49. The Raiders held the Chiefs offense to a three-and-out. Colquitt's punt landed in the end zone for a touchback and the Raiders took over at their own 20.

After two Jordan runs over the left side netted seven yards, the Raiders faced 3rd and 3. Collins overthrew Porter bringing up 4th down. P Shane Lechler's 56-yard punt was returned by Hall to the Chiefs 27.

Gibson broke up a pass intended for WR Chris Wilson deep down the left seam. Green then connected with Holmes for an 8-yard pickup on a screen pass. On 3rd and 2, Green found WR Chris Horn for an 8-yard gain and a first down. Green was then crushed as he threw and missed his target badly, but the Raiders were called for pass interference. The call put the Chiefs on the Raiders 21. A pass to Gonzalez picked up 7, a Holmes run gained two yards, and another Holmes run went backwards for a loss of a yard. Tynes came on and hit from 32 yards out to put the Chiefs up 17-10 with 2:33 left in the first half.

Carr returned Tynes' ensuing kickoff to the Raiders 29. A 56-yard Jordan touchdown run was wiped out by a holding penalty. The Raiders were unable to over come the penalty and were forced to punt. Hall's punt return was wiped out by a penalty. The Chiefs took over at their own 8 with :30 left in the half. A short Johnson run ended the second quarter.

The Raiders took the opening kickoff and marched to the Chiefs 33 but were forced to settle for a 50-yard field goal attempt. Janikowski's kick sailed wide left and the Chiefs took over at their own 40.

The Chiefs drove to the Raiders 28 before settling for a 46-yard field goal attempt, which OG Langston Walker blocked. It was the second blocked kick of the young season for Walker. The Raiders took over at their own 28.

Collins then found Moss deep down field. Moss made an amazing adjustment on the ball, beat double-coverage and hauled in the pass and raced 64 yards for a touchdown. Janikowski's PAT tied the game at 17 with 9:18 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Chiefs drove to the Raiders 21 but were forced to settle for a 39-yard field goal attempt. Tyne's successful kick put the Chiefs up 20-17 as time expired in the 3rd quarter. The Chiefs forced the Raiders into a three-and-out. Hall returned Lechler's 57-yard punt to the Kansas City 22. The Chiefs drove into Raiders territory but were forced to settle for a field goal. Tynes' 42-yard field goal put Kansas City up 23-17 with 8:46 left to play in the game.

The Chiefs held the Raiders to another three-and out. A holding penalty wiped out Hall's return of a Lechler punt. The Chiefs took over at their own 21 with 6:05 left to play. A few plays later, CB Charles Woodson stripped Parker of the ball and Schweigert pounced on it. On 3rd and 5, Collins hit Porter for 18 yards to the Chiefs 28. A pair of Jordan runs over the left side set the Raiders up at the Kansas City 14. A few plays later the Raiders faced 4th and 6 at the 10. Collins pass for Porter in the end zone fell incomplete. The Chiefs took over at their own 20.
